What is placemaking?

Placemaking is a collaborative process that involves planning, designing, building, and maintaining public spaces to benefit the people who use them:

    Placemaking can help build environments that benefit health and well-being.

    Placemaking can incorporate the arts and creative expression to establish a sense of place. 

The goals of placemaking include: 

  • Inspiring people to reimagine public spaces 

  • Strengthening the connection between community and public spaces 

  • Making people feel good about where they live, work, or play 

  • Creating vibrant public spaces that are open to a variety of uses and users 

  • Developing a place's identity and incorporating it into the existing built environment 

Some ingredients of great places include: 

  • People who care for and look after the space

  • Climate appropriate shade and sun

  • Trees and/or greenery

  • Safe and welcoming

  • Places to sit and relax

  • Easily accessible for people of all ages and abilities

  • Things to see and do
